Unveiling the Finest from Penedès and Beyond
We are thrilled to invite you to a mini-course on Spanish sparkling wines that features an absolutely unique lineup of wines.
Spanish sparkling wine is experiencing its most exciting period since the late 19th century when the phylloxera crisis inadvertently led to the birth of the traditional method sparkling wine production in the Penedès region.
Price wars, the widespread establishment of monoculture, the excessive use of “systemic” products, and the resulting degeneration of animal and plant life, made it necessary to re-think values and priorities and re-define the discourse on sparkling wines from Spain.
In a departure from Cava, both traditional and young vignerons are increasingly focusing on the land, viticulture, and, above all, quality. Over the past few years, new classifications, appellations, and collective brands with some of the strictest quality standards in the world have emerged. They all share the common goal of prioritizing terroir, organic and biodynamic viticulture, historical grape varieties, extended aging, and a commitment to environmental and social responsibility in their winemaking practices.
During this mini-course, Barcelona-based Spanish Wine Educator Cana Michiels, who works in the heart of Spanish sparkling wine production alongside industry pioneers, will provide insights into Cava, Corpinnat, Classic Penedès, and notable projects beyond Catalonia that rival the world's finest sparkling wines.
Over three hours we'll explore the history, leading producers, key regions, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques. The course will also cover climatic challenges and future prospects for Spanish sparkling wine. Cana’s expertise in the field ensures a comprehensive overview of this dynamic sector of the Spanish wine industry.
